ESCOBAR Marisol

Born as Marisol Escobar in 1930 in Paris of well-to-do Venezuelan parents. In 1949 she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian, Paris. In 1950 she moved to New York and continued her studies between 1951 and 1954 at the Hans Hofmann School, Provincetown, and at the Art Students' League, New York. She began to make her sculptures in wood and synthetic materials. In 1958 she had her first individual exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Her work was represented at the Festival of Two Worlds, Spoleto. From 1960 she constructed wooden sculptures with cast of human faces and limbs arranged in groups. In 1961 she was included in the Art of Assemblage exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1967 she had an individual show at the Hanover Gallery, London, and was included in the exhibition American Sculpture of the Sixties. In 1968 she had an individual exhibition at the Boymans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, and was represented at the Venice Biennale. In 1969 her work was included in an exhibition of Pop Art at the Hayward Gallery. She showed at the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, 1970, at the Art Museum, Worcester, 1971, and at the Cultural Center, New York, 1973. In 1991 she had an exhibition on her portrait sculptures at The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. ...
